Colour tattoo of a sitting cat filled with a night sky, pine trees and a small UFO, placed centrally on a person's upper back.

Galaxy cat with pine forest on back

Back · Colour · Photo

A sitting cat faces forward with wide blue eyes, its body filled with a galaxy sky in blue, teal and pink, with dark pine tree silhouettes and a small UFO near the base of the figure. The linework is loose and sketchy, with soft watercolour-like blending of colour across the cat's head and tail. The tattoo is centred on the upper back against a plain skin background, with a grey top visible at the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been coming down on the Tuesday market since before light, and the cat would not come in off the stall roof. Mags Okonedo, who sold mended umbrellas from a trestle by the clock tower, saw it first: a grey tabby sitting bolt upright on the tarpaulin, watching the sky as if it had been left in charge of it.

Nobody owned it. The fishmonger said it came up with the drains, and the butcher said it had been there since his father's time. Mags fed it scraps of kipper and, because it seemed to want company, told it things she told nobody else: that her brother had gone to sea on the Hebridean boat and not written, that umbrellas never sold in wet weather, that she had counted the stars every night since and never once found the one he had named for her.

On the third wet Tuesday the cloud tore open over the car park, and there was the sky underneath, deep blue and salted with light, pine-black hills rising out of nothing. A small silver saucer hung above the ridge, turning slowly. The cat stood, shook the water from its back, and the galaxy poured out of its fur and across the whole market, over the fish ice and the umbrellas and Mags's upturned face.

When the clouds closed again the cat was sitting on the stall as before, but every umbrella on the trestle was bone dry, and a single pink star winked in the gutter where the rain ran away down the drain. Mags never asked where it had gone. She tied a blue ribbon round the nearest post and left the kipper out every Tuesday after.
