Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded crown with beaded tips sits above a large, looping script letter B. The crown has dimensional highlights and the letter uses smooth, tapered linework with grey shading. The design is centred on pale skin with a plain background.

The silver polish had gone grey in the cracks again, and Mrs Okonedo would not let the under-cook touch the crown until it was done properly. Bea sat on the upturned flour bin with the cloth in one hand and the bent spoon in the other, working the tarnish out of the beads one by one. There were nine of them on the coronet that came out of the strongroom only at Michaelmas, and every one had to shine like a dew drop before the steward would sign for it.

Upstairs the house was loud with the new Lady's visitors. Someone's husband had asked twice where the lamp boy had gone, and someone else had laughed at the wrong place in a joke. Bea listened through the floorboards and kept her eyes on the metal. The crown was too heavy for any head she knew, so it was never worn. It was only carried, on a velvet cushion, from one room to another, and everyone who touched it was careful.
When the last bead gleamed, she turned the coronet over and found the letter scratched inside the band, a looping B that someone had cut with a sharp point and then gone over again, deeper. It was not the family's mark. She had polished that crown for three years and never noticed. She rubbed her thumb across the B until the grit came away, then set the crown back on its cushion with the letter facing down, where it had always been.
