Shaded crown tattoo on the torso
Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A large crown is shown in black and grey ink, with a fleur-de-lis finial, arched bands studded with dots, and a scrolled base. The shading gives the crown a raised, three-dimensional look against smooth skin. The crown sits centrally in the frame, with the surrounding skin softly lit and out of focus.

The crown was my mother's idea, and she never let anyone forget it. Three seasons back, when the Bellomy Brothers Grand Circus still had two elephants and a big top that didn't leak, she sat me down at the sewing machine in the wardrobe wagon and said a ring needs a queen. I was eleven. I stitched bugle beads onto the arched bands one at a time, each dot a small defiance against the rain.

By autumn the elephants had gone to a farm outside Lincoln and the tent had been patched so often it looked like a quilt. Nobody was paying for the crown. Dad pawned the fleur-de-lis finial, a brass thing off a Victorian chandelier, to buy diesel for the lorry, and I replaced it with a spoon handle bent into a lily. Mum said nobody in the back rows would know the difference. She was right, which was the trouble with the whole outfit.
On the last night in Shrewsbury there were eleven people in the stands, four of them asleep. I wore the crown anyway, pinned to a wig of knotted rope, and walked the sawdust while the band played a tune from a film nobody remembered. At the centre pole the spotlight stuck, and for a moment the beads caught it like a row of tiny moons.
Afterwards Mum folded the crown into tissue paper and put it in the trunk with the costumes nobody would want. I still have it. Some nights I take it out and look at the shadows the stitching throws, deep grey where the cord bites the metal, and I think a queen is only a crown with someone standing under it when the lights go down.
