Crown over a script letter B
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a detailed crown with beaded points and a banded, jewelled base, positioned above a large looping script letter B. The crown is rendered with shading and highlights, while the lettering uses bold, smooth strokes with soft grey shading. The image is a close, centred photograph of the design on bare skin against a warm, softly lit background.

Dear Nan,

The tide was wrong again this morning and Skipper Tully swore at the wheelhouse glass until it steamed over. We are out past the Dogger now with the net coming up heavy, and I am writing this on the back of a fuel docket because my notebook went overboard on Tuesday. Don't laugh. It was the B you stitched onto the cuff of my oilskins that kept me from doing the same.
Forty years the Bonnie Crowne has worked this ground, and nobody aboard can say why she carries a crown painted on her bow rail. Tully says the first owner's wife was queen of the Hull fish dock and that the B stood for Beatrice. Old Dennis says it stood for bloody trouble. I believe him more.
Last night the sea lay flat as a plate and Dennis taught me to tie a bowline with my eyes shut. He said that's how you learn a knot properly, by feel, the way you learn a letter when you can't see the page. I thought of you hunched over the lamp with your spectacles on, drawing that great looping B on the linen so the lettering wouldn't come out wonky.
Home in four days, weather permitting. Put the kettle on and keep the crown polished for me.
