Traditional leg tattoo with eagle, woman and clock
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
The tattoo covers a leg from the knee to the ankle and shows an eagle with spread wings, a woman's head with flowers in her hair, an eye above a banner, and a clock at the base. Bold black outlines define the forms, with solid fills of red, pink, green, blue and purple. The design is stacked vertically, with the eagle over the upper calf, the woman's face centred, and the clock at the ankle.

The clock over the bandstand at the Palais had stopped at twenty to eleven for as long as I had worked the cloakroom, and Mr Dunning swore he would have it seen to after the Christmas dance. Nobody believed him. We all knew the hands only moved when Vi Hollis wanted them to, because she was the one who wound it on Saturdays, standing on a chair with her hair pinned up in a red silk scarf and an unlit cigarette tucked behind her ear.

Vi was nineteen and had a laugh you could hear over the trombones. She danced every number with a different sailor, and every sailor went home certain he had been the one she chose. I used to hand her coat back at the end of the night and watch her count the coins in her palm. "Don't you dare tell me the time, Nell," she would say. "I know exactly what it is."
The night the telegram came from Chatham, she didn't dance at all. She sat under the clock with the paper flat on her knee, reading the same line over and over, while the band played on without her and the floor emptied around her like a tide going out. When the lights went up at midnight she finally climbed the chair and wound the clock, very slowly, and set the hands back to half past nine, the hour she had last been happy.
She went out through the side door with the scarf in her hand and the frost already silvering the tram lines. I locked up behind her and found the clock still ticking, keeping the hour she had given it.
