Black and grey realism tattoo on a lower leg showing a gothic church, an eye within twisting branches, and roots running down towards the ankle.

Gothic church, eye and tree on a calf

Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A gothic church with spires sits at the top of the design, above a large realistic eye set among bare, twisting tree branches. The trunk winds down the leg and spreads into knotted roots over the ankle, with fine shading on the bark and stonework. The tattoo is in black and grey throughout, and the leg fills most of the frame against a plain white background.

The churchwarden of Saint Oswin's had kept the parish ledger for forty years and had never once written down the eye in the elm, though he knew exactly where it was. Each Lady Day he walked the boundary with the bell rope coiled over his shoulder, and each year the old tree beside the lych gate had thrust another crooked limb towards the tower, as if reaching for the louvres where the bells hung.

Mary Thrale came up the path on the feast of the Annunciation with a basket of wet linen and a question she had plainly rehearsed. Her husband had gone out with the Cromer boats in February and not come home, and the coastguard had stopped sending letters. "You see everything from up there," she said, looking at the tower and not at him. "Does the tree watch the sea?"

He told her the truth, which was that the eye opened only for a promise someone meant to keep, and shut again when it was broken. He had seen it open for a midwife, for a poacher who returned a hare, for a girl who swore she would leave for London and then did not. Mary's eye, he said, had been open every morning she pegged the sheets out to dry.

She set the basket down and went to the tree. Roots as thick as a man's wrist heaved up through the churchyard turf and knotted over the graves like knuckles. She pressed her palm flat against the bark, and for a moment the iris turned, slow as a tide, and found her. The lifeboat came in on the evening ebb with two men aboard who had been lifted off Haisborough Sands. In the morning the churchwarden opened the ledger to a fresh page and found a single line written under the date, in a hand that was not his own: one, returned.
