Crown and faceted diamond on the chest

Geometric · Chest · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a black crown outline above a large faceted diamond with a keyhole cut into its centre. The diamond is filled with pastel panels in teal, pink, yellow, orange and purple, while the crown and thick outlines are solid black. The photo is taken close up and straight on, with a beige bra strap and two hands partly framing the skin.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the rope. The old man at the Cape would not sell it, and I'll say that first, because you'll all ask. Forty days out of Valparaiso with the water gone green and the biscuit crawling, and the mate still wanted to know what was in the tin under my bunk.

It was a stone, my lads, cut to a point like a ship's prow, and the lapidary had bored a keyhole through its middle so a man could look straight through the heart of it. Not a keyhole for a door. A keyhole for a crown. The crown sat above it in the cutter's drawing, inked so black it looked wet. Every facet caught a different light: teal off the Atlantic at dawn, pink from the sunset, yellow where the lamp hit it, and a purple that only came out after the rum.

Here is the turn. The king who commissioned it never saw the keyhole. The cutter kept it back, as cutters do, and sold the key to a locksmith in Bristol for the price of a passage home. So there is a diamond in the world with no lock that fits it, and a crown with no head to rest on, and I have carried both across two oceans in my oilskin.

When the wind drops at night, I hold it to the lantern and the light comes through the keyhole onto the planks, a small bright coin of colour. The men go quiet then, every one of them, because it looks like a door opening onto a country none of us will reach, and that is enough for a sailor to sleep on.
