Triangle with purple wash on upper back

Geometric · Back · Mixed · Photo

A photograph of the upper back of a person with long blonde hair pulled over one shoulder. The tattoo is an upward-pointing black outlined triangle with a horizontal line across its lower third. The inside is filled with a soft purple and blue wash that bleeds past the outline in places, giving a loose, painted look. The tattoo sits centrally on the back against plain, slightly freckled skin, with the hair and a patterned background framing the top of the image.

The ovens in Hollin Street were lit by four, and by half five I had the first tins sliding out onto the rack. Mrs Adeyemi, who ran the unit across the yard, once said our bakery smelled like a church that had decided to become a pub. I never understood what she meant, but I liked her for saying it.

The sky over the car park went from black to the colour of a bruise that was healing, and I took my tea out to the step to watch it. A triangle of light was coming up behind the bins, the way it does on the wet mornings, its lower edge sharp as a set square and its top bleeding into something softer. My father had a rule that you never trust a sky that hasn't made up its mind. I used to think he meant the weather.

Then the mill van came early, and Dev, who drove it, leaned out of the cab to say the sacks were short again. We argued about it in the yard with flour up to our elbows, two grown men pretending we weren't tired. By the time we'd agreed to ring the mill at nine, the purple had gone pale and the rooftops had edges again.

I went back in and pulled the last loaf. It had split along the top exactly where I'd scored it, a clean line with a soft gold underneath, and I stood there longer than I needed to, letting it cool on the board.
