Hold it to the window, Ada, not the lamp. The lamp lies to you. Old Tobias turned the rough crystal in his palm until the last of the dusk caught its face and split it into smoke-blue and rose. We had been working that blank since Michaelmas, and he had not once let me touch the wheel.

The stone had come up from the Wheal Ruth shaft in a carter's sack, with a scrap of paper that said only, Not for sale. Tobias did not sell it. He cut it facet by facet, from the top down, using the thin ring of the girdle as his guide. Each new face showed a colour that had not been there before: pink like the inside of a shell, then a violet that bled into blue at the edges where the light went thin.

On the last night of the cutting, the wind off the moor rattled every shutter in Penhallow. Tobias set the finished stone on the sill and sat with his back to it. Do not look at it yet, he said. It is still deciding what it is. I looked anyway. The facets held the last light the way a pond holds a sky, and every colour in them was moving, though nothing in the room moved.

By morning the stone was dull grey glass in the sun. Tobias said it always was. Keep it in the dark, he said, and it will remember the dusk for you. I still have it. I keep it in a tin under the bench, and some nights I take the lid off and wait for the window to go the colour of a bruise, and then I see what he meant.
