Galaxy-filled diamond on a thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A faceted diamond outline in heavy black linework sits on the upper thigh of a light-skinned person. The interior is filled with blue, violet and pink shading that resembles a night sky, with small white speckles suggesting stars. The tattoo is centred on a plain skin background with the edge of a dark garment visible at the top.

He was ninety-one and had been a jeweller's apprentice in Halifax before the war, and he kept his old loupe in his cardigan pocket the way other men keep a biscuit. He wanted her to fetch his wife's ring from the drawer. It was a small diamond, nothing grand, and he held it up between two fingers and told her every stone was a bit of night somebody had caught and cut to fit. Then he asked her to switch off the bedside light and hold the ring against the glass, so the lamp across the car park would come through it.
She did. The light broke into blue and violet and a pink that looked almost warm, and in the facets tiny points flickered as if the whole sky had been folded small and tucked inside the stone. Mr Varley laughed, a dry sound like turning paper. 'There,' he said. 'That's where I'll keep it.' He closed his fingers over the ring and was asleep before she'd switched the lamp back on. Nell wrote the time on his chart, three fourteen, and found she could not stop looking at the black window, sure now that the stars were in there somewhere, waiting to be cut.
