Crown and love script on the upper chest

Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo of a crown with a detailed, outlined design sits above the word Love written in flowing script. The linework is clean and the crown has some fine internal detail, with solid black fills in places. The tattoo sits centrally on the upper chest, and the photograph is cropped to show the skin, long brown hair and a cream top slipping off the shoulder.

The coronation tin had been on the mantel since June, and Dad still wouldn't let anyone open it. Mam kept the sugar in it now, and the wages were counted out beside it on Fridays, the coins stacked by the crown's points.

The letter came up the lane on a Tuesday, folded small inside a deputy's envelope. Tommy had written it at the face, by the light of his lamp, and the paper smelled of coal dust. He'd signed off with one word, pressed so hard the nib had split it: Love. He had never written it before. In our village we said things with our hands, a shove on the shoulder, a bag of cobs left on the step.

Two weeks later the cage stuck at the bottom of the number four shaft, and the women stood at the pit head until dark. I didn't go home. I sat on the bench outside the baths with the letter open on my knee and the wind pulling at my cardigan, reading that word until the ink went soft at the edges from my thumb.

They brought him up at ten past eleven, grey as the slag heaps, and he was alive, which Dad said was the only crown worth having. Later I took the tin down and rubbed the lid with my sleeve until the gilt caught the lamplight. Then I put the letter inside, under the sugar, where nobody would think to look.
