Small crown on upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A small crown is tattooed in black ink on the upper chest, near the collarbone. The outline and interior detail are drawn with fine, delicate linework and light stippling. A thin silver necklace with a round pendant crosses the skin on the left side of the frame.

You find the crown in the wrack below Skerry Point, a dome of pitted iron no bigger than your palm, still ringed with a few white barnacles like tiny pearls. Mrs Ferrier at the chandlery says it came off the lamp housing the winter the gallery rail went, and nobody on the island has come looking for it since.

You carry it up the path in your coat pocket, past the byre where the Hendry boys are mending creels, and set it on the windowsill of the keeper's cottage beside the tide tables. At dusk the lamp swings across the sound and touches it, and you begin to notice the detail: five points, each finished with a knob, and between them someone long ago pricked tiny dots to shade the metal. Salt has taken almost everything else. The dots are what remain.
In April the ferry captain, Tom Gunn, comes ashore for the post and sees it lying there. He asks where you got it and you tell him the honest answer, that the island keeps what the water gives back. He laughs and says that sounds like a crown with nothing left to rule. You don't argue. You only think that a thing can keep its shape without its gold, provided someone takes the trouble to mark it.
On the first calm morning of May you walk out to the lowest rock and wedge the crown into a crevice above the spring tide line. The lamp is still turning behind you. By noon the sea will have come and gone over it, and by next winter it may be gone too, which is the arrangement you have decided to accept.
