Red and gold crown tattoo on the inner wrist, with a small black script letter below it.

Crown and script letter on a wrist

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A shaded crown with a red velvet-style interior and gold rim, topped with a fleur-style finial, sits above a small black cursive letter. The crown has gold highlights and soft shading, and the letter is in fine black linework. The tattoo is centred on the inner wrist against a dark, softly lit background.

Dear Tomasz, the frost came early to Hollin Wood this year and the pheasants walk right up to the back step as if they've been invited. I am writing because the crown has come back to me, and I'd rather you heard it from my hand than from Mrs Ansty at the well.

You'll remember the tinker's cart that lost its axle by the stile in June. The tinker never came back for his goods, and Father bought the lot for a shilling, a tin of tallow and a hurdy-gurdy with no handle. Inside a box lined with red velvet gone the colour of a robin's breast was a crown no bigger than a teacup, its gold rim dulled and the little fleur on top bent like a question mark. I set it on the shelf above the range and told myself it was rubbish.

Last Sunday Jem scraped the soot off the underside of the lid and found a letter inked in a looping hand, an E with a tail curling like a fern. He wanted to know who would sign a crown so small, and I had no answer for him. That night I lay awake listening to the wood creak and thinking of a girl with a tin cup and a heavy coat, walking the lanes with her father's debts and her mother's spoon.

This morning I carried the crown down to the stile and set it on the post where the cart broke. I left the box open beside it, lined side up, so the red would catch the first light. By dinner it was gone, and there were two sets of small boot prints in the mud, and nothing else. I have not told Father. He would only say the tinker owed us a shilling and we are square now.

Your loving sister, Hettie
