Crown, pink bow and diamond on the upper back

Back · Colour · Photo

A small colour tattoo shows a gold crown above a pink bow, with a blue-grey faceted diamond to the right of the bow's tails. Outlines are dark and defined, with simple shading in the bow and diamond. The design sits on the upper back near the shoulder blade, and the subject is photographed from behind against a pale indoor background.

Every night the market on Cutler Street shut its shutters at the last bell, and every night old Hester Venn counted what was left on her trestle before she let her lamp go out. The woman who had left them came back at midnight with rain on her collar. She did not ask the price. She asked Hester a question instead, the old way, and Hester had never been able to refuse that. What do you keep that nobody has asked you for? Hester thought of her husband's pipe, her sister's letters, the cold front step where she sat each morning. She named none of them. She said she kept the lamp burning until the last customer had gone home, and the woman smiled as though that was the answer she had hoped for.

The woman took the handkerchief back, tied the bow in her own hair, set the crown on top, and pressed the diamond into Hester's palm. Carry it where no one looks, she said, and walked off towards the river bridge. Hester did not look at it again until morning, when the first light came up grey over the chimneys and she found the stone was warm.

She pinned it to the inside of her coat, where it would sit over her heart, and went down to open the stall. Cutler Street was empty, but a boy sweeping the gutter stopped to watch the sun catch on something bright at her collar, and she let him look.
