Four linked hearts with script names on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A vertical column of four outlined hearts, each joined to the next by flowing script lettering, runs down the centre of the upper back. Small solid hearts sit between the outlines. The linework is clean and thin, in black ink only, and the tattoo is photographed straight on against a plain pale background with the subject's hair and a black top visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

At Hollin Cross the signal wires ran from the box to the far end of the platform, and each of the four lamps hung from a loop of iron shaped like a heart, so a lineman could follow the line in the dark by touch. Old Mabel Trewin kept the box for forty years and never touched a loop without saying the name stamped beside it: Tomas, Ines, Edda, Pell. She said the names kept the wire from sagging in wet weather, and nobody in the village argued, because the line never sagged.

The trouble came in the spring that the stationmaster's girl, Ines, bought a ticket for the coast. She stood on the platform in her mother's brown coat with a cardboard case at her feet, waiting for the night mail, and her lamp would not stay lit. Mabel climbed down from the box, rubbed the iron loop with her thumb, and said that a loop cannot hold when one of its links has gone. Ines said she would only be gone until harvest. Mabel said that was what each of the brothers had said, and went back up the steps without another word.

The night mail came in with its lamps blazing and stood breathing at the platform for the length of a cough. Ines looked at the carriage door, then at the iron heart with her name on it, which had begun to glow a steady orange. She picked up her case and carried it back down the platform to the box.

In the morning Mabel found the ticket folded inside the loop, the return half still printed, and the lamp burning clean beside it.
