Rain had been coming sideways through the market since seven, and Maud Pelling had given up on the awning, which sagged over her trestle table like a wet sail. She moved the hatboxes underneath and sorted through a biscuit tin of old ribbons, pink satin with black spots, the kind her mother used to sew into her Sunday coat. Nobody bought ribbon in a downpour. Nobody bought anything but tea.

At half past eleven a lad in a soaked parka stopped at the stall and asked whether she sold anything gold. He had a fistful of coins, mostly coppers, and the look of someone who had already been turned away twice. Maud dug under the velvet trays and brought out a brooch no bigger than a thumbnail: a crown with a small pink bow at its centre, the enamel chipped on one point. Her father had pinned it to his good suit the day he came home from the county court, and he never told her who had given it to him.

The lad offered four pounds and forty pence. Maud counted it twice in the rain, then pushed the coins back across the table and handed him the brooch. "It's worth more to someone who's going somewhere," she said. He fixed it to his collar without looking at it, then he did look, and something in his face went soft.

After he had gone, the rain ran off the awning in a steady string, and the lettering painted across the valance, RESPECT AND HONOUR in her father's careful capitals, began to lose its edges. Maud left it. She had the ribbon tin, and the afternoon was long, and she found she did not mind the wet at all.
