The crown came out of the bean rows the spring after the hard frost, when Old Mabry's spade turned up a lump of black iron no bigger than a child's fist. She rubbed it on her apron and found beads underneath, a ring of them pressed into the metal, and above them curled arches that rose like the tendrils of a vine. Mabry had no use for kings, but she had a use for anything that gleamed when wet, so she set it on the windowsill to dry.

The village had once had a king, or so the old men said, and he had lost his crown in the flood at the mill ford the year the bridge went. Nobody had ever found it. Mabry scrubbed the iron with sand and vinegar until the grey bloom lifted, and on the peak she found a small cross, worn nearly flat by river gravel. The miller's boy came to her door that evening, pale as flour, and asked whether she had seen anything shining in her garden.

She told him the truth, which was that the ground had given it up and the ground was owed nothing. Then she carried the crown back out to the bean rows, knelt, and set it in the soft earth where the spade had struck. By midsummer a rose had climbed through the arches and hung its red heads over the beads, and the miller's boy, who had come to claim the king's gold, found only bees working the flowers and a crown that no longer needed anyone to wear it.
