Crowned lion on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A lion's head in profile wears a crown, with a full mane falling behind it. The lion is rendered in soft, layered grey shading with fine strands in the mane and detail in the face. The tattoo sits on a forearm against a plain, softly blurred background, with a patterned black and white top at the edge of the frame.

Agnes Pell had been up since two, and by the time the lion came to the back door the first tray of rolls was cooling on the sill. He did not knock. He sat on the step with his grey head lowered and his mane falling over his shoulders like wet rope, a small iron crown set askew between his ears, and he waited for her to notice him.

She noticed him. She had married a man who once argued with a bear over a sack of barley, and she was not one to scream at a visitor before she knew what he wanted. "You're letting the cold in," she said. The lion said he had walked down from the high country since the last new moon, and that he was hungry, and that a king who goes hungry at dawn cannot be trusted to keep the sun where it belongs.
Agnes thought that was nonsense, but she had heard the old women say the same, so she tore the heel from the nearest roll and held it out. He took it in his teeth as gently as if it were an egg. He broke it on the step, dropped half into the frost for the sparrows, and ate the rest slowly, with his eyes shut.
When she looked up, the eastern hill had gone the colour of pewter, then of brass, and the sun came over it exactly on time. The lion was gone. On the step lay a ring of crumbs, neat as a crown, and in the frost beside it the print of a great paw. Agnes swept the crumbs into her apron, and she baked a double batch the next morning, just in case.
