Crowned queen in an ornate mirror on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A crowned queen with dark eyeshadow and red lips is framed by a decorative mirror with scrolling ornament and a poison apple at the top. A red heart pierced by a dagger sits at the base of the frame. The bold outlines, smooth colour fills and soft shading are set against darker brown ornament, and the design fills the thigh.

Dear Ines,

The mirror came up on the salvage barge on the ninth day of the tide, wrapped in sailcloth that smelled of pitch and something sweeter underneath. Hobb wanted to strip the frame for the brass, but the glass was still whole, and when I wiped it with my sleeve a woman looked back who was not me. She wore a crown the colour of old pennies and a face painted for a court that no longer sends for anyone.
I have been keeping her covered under a dyed cloth in the back room of the depot. Every evening I lift the corner to check she has not moved, and every evening she has not, which is somehow worse. Last night she asked me, in a voice like cold syrup, which of the three of us on the barge had the steadiest hand. I did not answer. Hobb did, from the doorway, and then he went very quiet and stopped eating his bread.
There is a little green apple carved above the frame, and a heart pierced by a blade hanging from the bottom scroll, as if someone once meant to be done with her and lost their nerve. I have been turning that blade over with my thumbnail. It is sharper than it looks.
I am sending this by the Thursday post, though nothing has left the Reach since the line was cut. If you do not hear from me, do not come for the glass. Take the apple, if there is one left on the stall, and bury it somewhere she cannot see the sky.
Love, Sol
