Woman portrait with red roses and pearls
Neo-trad · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A stylised portrait of a woman with dark, flowing hair, wide eyes and red lips, framed by large red roses with green leaves. A strand of grey-shaded pearls runs through her hair and down across her chest. Bold black outlines and smooth colour shading give a vivid, graphic finish, and the design fills the frame against the skin.

The rose-seller came by the back gate every Thursday with buckets of Cardinal reds wrapped in the Chronicle. Ada gave him a shilling for the spent heads, which she pressed flat between blotting paper and tucked inside her ledger, because the florist on Lamb's Conduit Street had told her dried petals kept their scent for years. She had a ledger full of them now. Each page smelled of somebody else's wedding.
Mrs Abernethy arrived on the Friday with her hat already angry. "Well?" she said. Ada laid the restrung strand across the velvet and watched the woman's face rearrange itself, lips parting the way they did when a thing was worth more than she'd expected. "Two were lost," Ada said. "I've replaced them with grey Tahitian drops. Nobody will see the difference unless they hold them to the window."
Mrs Abernethy held them to the window. Then she laughed, a small, startled sound, and pressed two pink petals from the ledger into Ada's palm. "Keep those," she said. "You'll want something to show for the morning."
