Crucifixion scene on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A figure hangs on a wooden cross with head bowed beneath a crown of thorns and long dark hair, with a small black cross below. The figure is rendered in soft, realistic greyscale shading with fine detail in the hair and thorns, while a red drip on the wrist adds a blood effect. The composition is set against an orange-red sun halo and a pale blue sky wash, photographed against a plain dark grey wall with the hand clenched.

The man on the middle cross had stopped calling out. His head sagged under the thorns, and his dark hair fell forward the way wool falls from a shorn ewe. Beside her, the old potter Eliab muttered that the light was wrong for a feast day, that the sky had no business being so blue and so bruised at once. Miriam said nothing. She was counting the nails lying in the dust where the hammer had dropped them, four of them, and the small iron cross someone had scratched into the ground beneath the nearest stake.
When the wind turned, she felt something warm run down her wrist. She looked down and found a thin red thread where the skin had split against the basket's rough rim, though she could not remember catching it. She wiped it on her skirt and started down the path. The basket was light for the first time in years, and behind her the sun slid under the ridge, leaving only a ring of orange at the edge of the hill.
