Martial arts fighter character on forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a shouting male fighter in a white gi and red headband, with a clenched fist near the bottom of the design. Bold outlines and smooth shading give the figure a cartoon-like, illustrative finish. Red, white, grey and skin tones fill the design, which runs along the forearm from the wrist towards the elbow, and two near-identical photos are shown side by side.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The canvas has more patches than sky by October, and the crowd at the gate is mostly rain. Wrap your hands the way your old coach taught you, tight at the knuckle, and listen to the generator cough behind the caravans. Mr Pell has painted CHALLENGE OF THE CENTURY on a board by the ticket booth, and the letters have started to run.

Tonight's challenger is a farmer's son from Wrexham who thinks a headband makes a man unbeatable. You remember being him. The ring is a square of sawdust under a single bulb, and the front row is three children and a spaniel. Before the bell you shout, the way the old masters did, to frighten the fear out of your own chest, and the sound climbs right up to the tent poles.

He comes in swinging wild, the way you did at nineteen, and you let two punches slide past your ear. Then you spot his grandmother in the third row, clapping with her handbag on her knees, and you understand the fight was over before the bell. You lower your fist. The crowd goes quiet in the way a crowd does when it is waiting for blood, so you give them something else instead.

You lift the boy's hand and hold it high. Behind the curtain Pell is already counting coins into paper bags. Outside, the rain has stopped, and across the field the lights of the next town blink on one by one, and you find you are not sorry to be walking towards them.
