Halfway up, the fall had opened a seam of grey stone, and in it sat clusters of quartz, points stacked like the teeth of a comb, each facet so clean the lamp slid off them. I wrapped four in sacking and stowed them in the panniers. The mule, Hettie, stopped twice to look back at me, which she never did.
At the cairn a man in a pressed coat was waiting with a theodolite and a ledger. He wanted the pass measured for a railway that would never be built, and he offered me a shilling a stone for every crystal I could carry down. I told him the mountain had its own accounts. He laughed, then looked at the sacking, and the lamp caught the faces through the cloth and threw small white stars across the snow.
I kept one back. The others went down in his cart. In spring I set the spare on the windowsill above the sink, and by June a hairline of new growth had crept over its tip, faint as frost, and I stopped minding about the shilling.
