The paper came from the mill at Carrow Bridge, a ream of it cut square by Mr Dacre's boy, and Nell Ambrose folded the first fox on her kitchen table before the kettle had boiled. She creased each line with her thumbnail, valley and mountain, the way her mother had taught her, until the fox sat up with its ears pointed and its chest turned out like a bell.

Hollin Dene had one shop, one chapel and a horse that belonged to nobody. In the hard winter of 1953 the coal ran out by February, and Nell folded hearts from the spare pages of the rent book and set them along the windowsills so the children would have something to count. The fox she kept back. It rode in her apron pocket wherever she went, and when the miller's youngest failed to come home through the snow, Nell unfolded it on the chapel step and set it facing the beck.

The fox went ahead of them in the lamplight, its angled sides catching the glow and throwing it in sharp planes across the drifts. Nobody believed the paper could lead anything, but where the fox stopped, the men dug, and under the hawthorn they found the boy curled in his mother's red scarf, his mittens gone, humming the chapel hymn to keep himself awake.

Nell kept the fox after that, though it was creased soft at the ears. In spring she found a new one folded on her sill, a deer with a crown of antlers and a diamond set on its back, and she never learned who had made it.
