Crystal eyes with tears and lettering
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A black and white drawing of two stylised eyes with brushy eyebrows above them. Each iris is rendered as a faceted diamond, and dark tears run down from beneath the eyes. The phrase Cover your crystal eyes and let your colors bleed and blend with mine is set in bold hand-lettered black type around the illustration.

The mason's boy came up the moor road the week the rain finally stopped, with his chisels in a sack and a dried thistle in his pocket for luck. Carrick Hold had been a ruin for forty years, but the lord's daughter still lived in its north tower, or so the shepherds swore. They said her eyes were cut from river crystal, faceted and cold, and that when she wept, the tears ran down in dark threads and stained the stone where they fell.

Tam did not believe the shepherds until he saw her at the tower window, her face pale as chalk, a grey veil knotted loosely over her brow. 'My father would have me hide these,' she said, 'but the tears come whether I want them or not. Bind them for me, mason, and then take your ochre and your indigo and let your colours bleed into mine.' So he tied the cloth gently over her eyes and mixed his pigments with the water running down her cheeks, and the two colours spread across the sill like dye in a basin.
Her father found the paint on the stone in the morning and bricked the window up by noon. Tam climbed the scaffold that night anyway, and worked through the rain with a hammer and a candle until the wall was open again and the pale blue and rust red had soaked into the broken glass. Whatever came from her eyes after that dried clear as water and bright as a coin.
Even now, when the moor is wet and the old tower goes dark, travellers say the north window glows where two colours meet. They say the lord's daughter is still in there, looking out along the road for a mason who never came back down.
