Sun and moon with eye, roses and arrows
Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink drawing of a tattoo design shows a sun and crescent moon split down the centre, with an eye in the sun half and a profile in the moon half. Three roses and several arrows are placed among long radiating lines, and the sun and moon are shaded with stippled dots. The image is entirely black and grey on a cream background, with a balanced, symmetrical composition.

Mrs Hester Blount had kept the almanac for the Harrow Fell lead mines for thirty-one years, and in all that time nobody had asked her why the sun and moon on its cover faced each other across a seam. She was asked now, by the new clerk, a boy called Tobias Ream with ink on his cuffs and no patience for the old printer's habits.

"It's a sum, not a picture," she told him, sliding the proof across the bench. "The eye is the day looking back at us. The profile is the night, turned away so it can keep its secrets."
He squinted at the arrows. Three of them, she said, for the three shifts, and the roses for the three widows who had sent their husbands' wages back up the fell in the spring of the flood. Every ray ran to the centre point where the lines met, and she had drawn them by lamplight so that no two would cross the same stretch of paper twice.
Tobias laughed and said the printer would never pay for so much stippling. Hester did not argue. She only pointed at the eye, which she had shaded last, and which she had never once let herself look at straight on.
"Put the arrows up front," she said. "The men read the arrows. They never read the faces."
