Shine On You Crazy lettering inside a diamond

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A black and white graphic design showing the words SHINE ON above YOU CRAZY in bold, rounded, retro-style bubble lettering. The text sits inside a solid black diamond built from triangular facets, with a row of triangles forming the top and larger triangles forming the lower point. The image is a flat solid fill with no shading, and it is a clean digital design rather than a photograph of skin.

Maud had cut stones in the back room above the Hatton Garden shop for nineteen years, and no one had ever told her to shine on and meant it. So when the boy from the sign works came up the stairs with a rolled drawing under his arm, she set down her loupe and waited for him to explain himself.

"It's for the lettering," he said. "Bubble letters, the kind you see on the vans. My uncle wants them in a shop window, but the man says a diamond first, then the words across the middle, like a sign for the whole street."

She unrolled it on the bench. Someone had drawn the facets with a ruler and a kind of nervous joy, triangles stacked like a crown, the words swelling and slumping through the centre. SHINE ON above YOU CRAZY. She thought of the dull yellow stone in the tray by her elbow, a Ceylon sapphire her late husband had bought in 1961 and never let her wear, cloudy as weak tea.

She did not tell the boy any of that. Instead she took the sapphire out, turned it under the lamp until the light caught a crooked facet on the back, and told him to come back on Thursday, when the window would be ready and so would she.

On Thursday the diamond was still a drawing, but the sapphire sat in a new setting on a silver chain. When Maud pinned the design to the glass, the sun came through the cut and threw a small blue word onto the pavement.
