Your master, Mr Ansell, has been dead since March, and the shop on Coulson Lane has been yours to keep open, which mostly means dusting the rows of painted irises in their tin trays and answering the telephone.

The commission is small. A nephew wants a left eye made to sit beside his late mother's ring at the wedding, a thing to keep her looking on. He has brought a photograph taken in a garden, a blurred hand held over the lens, and a single real eyelash stuck to the back of the envelope. You spend two evenings with a brush no thicker than a hair, laying down fine greys, a ring of smoke around the pupil, and a highlight placed the way Mr Ansell taught you, slightly off centre, so it looks as if it has just caught a window.

On the morning of the wedding you carry the eye to the church yourself in a pillbox, and it sits on the lace cushion beside the ring box. Nobody cries. Halfway through the vows the grandmother leans across, squints at it, then at you, and nods, as if you have passed a test she set long ago.

Afterwards you find Mr Ansell's old note tucked in the lid of the tray: match the eye you are looking at, not the one you remember. You look at the cushion. The glass is turned towards the window, and the highlight, catching the light, has never looked so much like it was watching you back.
