Traditional · Colour · Flash

A drawing of a heart shaped design with a scalloped pink and black outline and a small bow at the top. Inside, a detailed open eye with a blue iris and dark lashes sits at the centre, surrounded by radiating black lines. The heart is filled with turquoise shading that fades toward the edges, set on a plain pink background.

Mind the pan, Dunn shouts, though the pan is already sliding off its gimbal and the onions are making for the bulkhead as if they have somewhere better to be. You jam your hip against the range, catch the handle with a tea towel and tip everything back where it belongs. The boat drops off a swell and the whole galley drops with her: kettle, spoons, the cracked clock stopped at ten past four.

Above the sink sits the tin. Old Mags left it behind when her knuckles got too bad for the rolling, a biscuit tin with a heart painted on the lid, turquoise fading to white at the edges, a pink bow tied at the top and a black-lashed eye at its centre looking straight down at the draining board. Mags swore it watched the sea for them. Every man on the Brightwater touches the lid before he goes out on deck, and you have always done it too, though you would never admit it.

The next roll throws you against the table and the lid pops loose. Out spill no biscuits but a bundle of folded tally sheets, each headed with a name and a count of meals served. Tucked underneath, in Mags's wobbly capitals, is a note: FEED THEM FIRST. THE EYE KEEPS THE COUNT.

You stuff the sheets back, switch on the kettle and shout up the companionway for the watch. Eleven heads come down through the hatch, streaming and grinning, asking what smells so good. You ladle the first bowl of soup and, for the first time since you came aboard, you look up at the lid and say, quite out loud, I know, Mags. I can see them.
