Milkshake with cherry and polka dot bow
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A milkshake in a tall glass, topped with swirled mint whipped cream, a red cherry and a striped straw, is tattooed on the forearm. A red bow with white polka dots is tied around the glass, with a teal shell at the base and faint pink hearts scattered behind. Bold black outlines, solid fills and soft shading give it a bright, retro look, shown against a pale blue paper background.

Dear Maud,

Mr Pritchard has finally let me take the refreshment room counter on Saturdays, so you can stop calling me the girl who hides in the back. The trains come in from Crewe every twenty minutes and the men off them want tea, pies, and, if they have a sweetheart waiting, a milkshake to carry to her. I make them in the tall steel tumblers, two scoops of mint and a squirt of syrup, then I pile the cream on top the way Mrs Dobbs showed me, round and round until it stands up on its own.
Last Saturday a lad in a demob suit ordered one for a girl called Irene who was waiting on platform four. He wanted a red bow tied round the glass, which I thought was daft until I saw his face. I found red ribbon at the haberdasher's and dotted it with white paint from the signwriter's tin, then knotted it tight. He tipped me a shilling and forgot his change.
That was the last I saw of him, though I keep thinking about the scallop shell he left on the counter, picked up from the beach at Southport and faintly warm from his pocket. I've put it by the till. If Irene ever comes back looking for him, I'll tell her the milkshake was on the house.
Write back soon and tell me whether the seaside landladies are still charging you for ice.
Love, Vi
