Shark cupcake with parasol on thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A shark head with an open, toothy mouth rises from a purple cupcake topped with red frosting, with a small parasol and a red tentacle-like curl above it. Bubbles and teal water swirls surround the design, and a shark fin sits at the lower edge. The bold black outlines and smooth colour shading are typical of neo-traditional work, and the design fills most of the thigh.

Put that spoon down, Tobias, and listen, because the galley is the only warm room on this tub and I'll not tell it twice. There was a shark called Gorrick who lived out past the Dogger Bank, and he had a sweet tooth the size of a lifeboat.

Every Thursday the cook of the Marigold Belle set a cupcake on the rail to cool, purple paper cases with red frosting piled up like wet coral. Gorrick would drift up under the hull, nose the thing off the rail, and carry it down to the cold dark where he kept a silk parasol a Japanese trader had lost overboard years back. He liked to sit beneath it while he ate, shielding the frosting from the grey drizzle that never stops over the Bank.

One Thursday the cook was a lad named Pell, sharp-eyed and not nearly so daft as he looked. He tied a length of red thread to the cake and waited, a pot of tea going cold beside him. When Gorrick's jaws closed, Pell hauled, and the shark came up out of the foam with his great mouth wide open, outraged, and a crumb of frosting caught on every tooth.

Gorrick never bit another cupcake. He swam back to the Bank with his parasol furled and his pride in tatters, and Pell kept the rail clear of sweets for the rest of the voyage. The crew still swear that on calm nights you can hear Gorrick humming to himself out past the lights, somewhere under a purple umbrella.
