Curled sleeping cat on the thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A single black line drawing shows a cat curled into a loaf shape with its head tucked against its tail. Short, feathered hatching marks suggest the stripes and fur, and the outline is thin and even. The piece is in black ink only and sits alone on the upper leg above the knee against plain skin and a dark background.

Dear Ruth,

You asked whether the cat has finally given up on the shed roof. He hasn't. Parsnip came with the allotment the way the rust did, and Dad always said nobody owned him, which is why he sleeps wherever he likes. This week it's the warm concrete under the water butt, curled so tight he looks like a loaf someone forgot to put in the oven, nose tucked down against his own tail.
I've been sowing the runner beans in the seed trays by the back door, the ones Dad labelled in capitals on masking tape. Every morning I find Parsnip has moved in amongst them, and every morning I lift him out and he gives me the look he gave Dad when the rhubarb got cut back too hard. Then he walks two steps and folds up again, as if the whole plot were a cushion arranged for his benefit.
Last night the frost came early, so I carried the trays indoors meaning to leave them on the kitchen windowsill. When I went back out at dusk he was asleep on the upturned wheelbarrow, head pushed into his tail, and I didn't have the heart to move him. This morning I dug the first row by hand around the shape of him and left the square where he lay unplanted, just a patch of dark soil with one leaf of mint standing in it.
The beans can wait another fortnight. Come up at Easter and bring your boots. They're going in the far row, and Parsnip has already appointed himself supervisor.
Love, Nell
