Cat and dog in a frame on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A cat and a dog are drawn in thin, continuous black outlines inside a square frame on the forearm. The linework is minimal, with little or no shading, and the animal shapes are simplified. The ink is black on pale skin, and the frame sits centrally on the arm with a hand resting at the top of the photo.

You take the last shift at Hollin Cross because Mr Ferris has a bad hip and nobody else wants the lost property cupboard under the stairs. The first thing you find is a dog lead with no dog attached, looped over a hook as if it expects someone to come back for it.

The cat turns up on the 22:14 from Carlisle, though nobody sees it board. A guard swears a ginger tom walked the length of the train and stepped down onto the platform as if checking the timetable. Ferris told you once about the pair who used to share the bench outside the buffet, a cat that waited for the taxi rank dog to finish its rounds, and how they dozed side by side until the last train pulled out. He never said where they went. He only said the bench was colder after.
You carry the lead and a biscuit tin of unclaimed things out to that bench. The brass tag on the lead says BELLA and a phone number with the last two digits rubbed away. The cat settles on the far end without being asked, tail curled, and you sit between them while a shunting engine argues with the buffers somewhere beyond the footbridge.
At ten to midnight a woman in a green coat comes up the stairs calling a name that isn't Bella. You stand. The cat slides off the bench and sits at the foot of the stairs, watching her the way a clerk watches a queue. She stops, looks at the lead in your hand, and says she has been searching for the wrong animal all evening. By morning the cat has claimed the chair in the lost property office, and the lead hangs above it, still waiting.
