Fine line black tattoo of two outlined hands, one reaching up and one below holding its wrist, on the calf above a black sock and brown boot.

Two outlined hands on a lower leg

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two open hands drawn in thin black outline, one raised upwards and one below it, with the lower hand appearing to meet the wrist of the upper one. The linework is single weight with no shading, and the design sits on a light skin tone against a dark background. The composition is centred on the lower leg, with the tattoo placed just above the top of a black ribbed sock.

The signal was older than the radio, Tom Halloran said, and the men on the Serena still used it when the wheelhouse glass was too salted to read. You raised your open palm high, the way you'd show a dog you had nothing in your hand, and the skipper answered by cupping his own hand under your wrist. Hold. Don't come in on the next swell. I had seen it a hundred times from the rail without once asking what it cost him to make it.

In February the swell came up out of nowhere off the Dogger, and the net block sang on its wire like something alive. I was on the gallows with a shackle in my teeth when the deck tipped and my boot went out from under me. Tom's hand came down out of the wheelhouse door and closed on my wrist before I had time to be frightened. He held it there, not pulling, just holding, until the boat came level and I could find the rail again. Afterwards he went back to his charts and never mentioned it, and I understood only then that I had been the one on the wrong side of the signal.

My father met us on the quay at Grimsby that Sunday, cap in his fist and the wind shoving at his coat. When he saw me step off the gangway he lifted his hand, palm open, the way every man on the fleet had learned to do. I raised mine back. He didn't wave. He reached up and put his other hand under my wrist, the way Tom had, and stood there in the cold with his fingers around the air between us until the gulls settled and the boat behind me stopped rocking.
