Script quote running down the back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A bare back is shown on the left, with a thin line of cursive script running vertically beside the spine. The close-up on the right shows the phrase "do small things with great love" in delicate, single-weight linework in dark ink. The ink is dark grey or black on a light skin tone, and the composition is a simple two-panel layout with the text as the focus.

You have swept the same boards at the Pavilion every Thursday for thirty-one years, and you know which tile by the orchestra pit lifts when the bass drum hits. Tonight the band is a three-piece from Margate who play too fast, and the couples keep stumbling into the dark patch by the bar where a bulb blew in March. Nobody has asked you to fix it. You fix it anyway, with the stepladder and a spare from the cupboard under the stage.

Mrs Ada Crane sits at the same table by the fire door, handbag on her knees, watching the floor the way some people watch a kettle. Last month she asked you to dance, and you told her your knees were not up to it, which was true, and she laughed as though you had said something clever. She keeps a dance card from 1962 in the tin where she puts her pennies for the urn, and you have never once seen her write on it.
Tonight she is not at her table. You find her out on the back step with the card open on her lap and a pencil going slowly along the margin. Beneath the faded names of men long gone she has written, in careful capitals, do small things with great love. "Tom Hollis told me that the week we met," she says, without looking up. "He said a hall is only walls until somebody cares about the skirting boards." She holds the card out to you as if it were a ticket.
You take the pencil and add your own line under hers, a clumsy one about the bulb. Then you go back inside and switch the new light on. It throws a clean circle over the gap by the bar, and the couples glide through it without looking down, and Ada, behind you, begins to hum.
