Dagger and rose on a calf
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A dagger with an ornate hilt pierces a large red rose, with its blade running down past the bloom. The rose is shaded in soft pinks and reds, while the dagger is solid black with fine detail on the hilt. Loose green washes and leaves sit behind the rose against a blurred outdoor background.

The pedlar's mule would not go past the third bend, so Ilse Varga walked the last of the pass herself with the rose tucked in her apron. It had been cut that morning from the wall of the chapel at Kestel, where the monks grew nothing else, and it was already bruising at the petals by the time the wind came down off the snow.

Her brother Tomas had gone over the ridge in March carrying a dagger their father had forged for the border guard, a thing with a hilt like a tangle of iron vines. He had promised to be back before the thaw. The thaw had come and gone twice. Nobody in the valley would say he was dead, and nobody would say he was living either.
At the cairn above the pass she found a wooden marker with a blade driven through it, the point wedged deep in the stone. Someone had knotted a red rag around the hilt. Ilse pulled the blade free, which took both hands, and laid the rose across the split in the wood where the metal had been. The petals opened against the grain, and in the hollow of the bloom she found a folded paper, dry as a leaf, with her brother's hand on it.
It said only: the road is shorter from here, keep the blade and carry the flower down. She laughed until she coughed, because he had never once in his life given a direction without also giving a joke. She carried the dagger down the far side, and the rose with it, and by the time the lamps were lit in the valley the petals had gone dark at the edges and the blade was warm in her grip, as though someone had only just set it down.
