Red rose and foliage sprig on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small floral sprig sits on the forearm, centred on a red rose with a pink and orange bloom. Thin green leaves, tiny red buds and a few orange flower heads extend from it in a diagonal line. The shading is soft and painterly, and the colour is applied in warm reds, greens and oranges against bare skin, with a cream knitted fabric visible at the left edge.

Dorrin Vell had the rose cuttings tucked inside her coat when the lights went amber on Deck Nine, and she did not stop to ask anyone's leave. The garden was the only thing aboard that had never been rationed, and the old saying held that a rose kept in a warm hand would outlast a hull. She packed the stems into wet moss, one bud after another, and climbed past the hydroponic bays with the cold coming up through her boots.

At the lock she met Haskel, who ran the water works and had not been seen to smile in forty years. "That's a lot of rose for one woman," he said. She told him it was not for her. It was for the sprig of red berries the children had been chalking on the bulkhead, and for the orange blooms that hung over the seed vault like lamps. He looked at her a long while, then stood aside.
Outside the hull the dark was thick as wool. They walked the service ring for three nights, giving the moss a thimble of water each dawn, until the bud at the top split open, red at the heart and pink at the edge, the colour of a kettle lid in firelight. Haskel knelt beside her and said nothing, which was how she knew he was moved.
The people of the ship still tell it this way: a rose that comes up through the cold will carry the ring home. Dorrin planted the cutting by the vault door, and it leafed out green as ever. Each spring a child ties a sprig of berries to the handrail there, and the pilots say the ship hums a little softer that week.
