Pink roses and buds on an upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a large open pink rose with layered petals, a smaller rose behind it, and a closed bud near the top, with dark green leaves and stems trailing down the arm. The petals are shaded with soft red and pink tones and darker outlines, and the leaves use several greens for depth. The arm is raised against a blurred indoor background, with the tattoo sitting toward the lower part of the upper arm.

Dear Win, I went down the allotments on Saturday with the spade Dad kept oiled, and the big pink bush by the coal shed has come out in one bloom the size of a saucer, which is cheek considering the council has given us till Michaelmas to clear the plots. The men from the council stood at the gate with their clipboards and didn't look at it once.

Mrs Hetherington next door says the rose will not survive being moved, and she has never once been right about flowers, so I have ordered a bucket of sharp sand from the builders' yard and I am going to try. Dad bred the thing from a cutting his own father brought over from the Dales in a tin with the lid punched for air. He used to say it bloomed best when the pit was working, because the men came up with their hands full of coal dust and went to look at it before the bath. I thought that was nonsense until I watched him do it.
I have wrapped three cuttings in the Chronicle and put them in my handbag, and I know you will say I'm soft. The little bud by the gate has not opened yet. It is tight and red at the edges, like it is holding its breath for the last shift. I left it on the stem, because cutting it would be like shutting the door on the one that's still to come.
Come up at Easter if you can. Bring your Leeds face and I'll make you a plate of tatties. The cuttings are in the window box, watered twice a day, and if they take you'll have a rose of your own that nobody can tell you to dig up. Love, Ada.
