The daisies came up through the bowling green again the week after the council cut it, which is the sort of thing Dad would have called a provocation. He spent forty years rolling that lawn flat and cursing every white head that dared show above the line. Now the whole bank by the bus shelter is starred with them, and I have stopped pretending I mind.

Mrs Okonedo from number nine knocked on Tuesday with a trowel and asked whether we could dig up a strip of the verge for her grandchildren. I said yes before she had finished the sentence. We worked in the drizzle, four of us, and the smallest boy found a worm as long as a shoelace and screamed about it for ten minutes. Nobody mentioned the committee once.

Ruth from the parish sent a formal letter about the boundary, and I wrote my reply on the back of it. Tell them the flowers hold a public right of way now. Tell them the stems keep going, a little further each spring, into the cracks between the paving and under the bench where Dad sat with his crossword and his flask.

I found one last night pushing up beside the back step, pale at the rim and darker in the middle, and I stood in the porch with the light off until I could not make it out any more. Then I put the kettle on. It seems a silly thing to write to you about, but you always did want to know what was growing without you.
