Realism colour tattoo of a pink gerbera daisy with a green stem and dripping red-pink paint effect on the side of a torso, above jeans.

Pink gerbera with dripping petals on ribs

Realism · Ribs · Colour · Photo

A realistic pink gerbera daisy with layered petals, a dark centre ringed in orange, and a green stem curving down toward the hip. Thin pink drips run down from the lower petals, giving a painted or bleeding effect. Soft shading and small highlights on the petals create depth, and the design sits on the side of the ribs against a dark background.

The old women of Alder Cross said the gerbera seeds came over in a sack of wool, and that the first flower to open in the valley was pink, with a black eye at its heart that never closed. Nobody picked them. You could take a bunch to the chapel on feast day, but by morning the petals had begun to weep their colour down the stems, and the vicar's wife would scrub the altar cloth and say nothing.

When the reunion came round, forty years after the school closed, Margaret Pell walked up from the station with a single bloom in a jam jar, wrapped in damp newspaper. She did not say who it was for. She set it on the bench outside the hall where the girls used to sit, and the drips ran down the glass and pooled on the wood like a slow confession.

Two of them came out to find her. Irene had married the miller's son and had hands like roots now. Susan had gone to the city and come back with a voice that wanted to be agreed with. They stood either side of the jar and neither of them asked about the flower, because they had both been twelve once, and had both sworn on the same bloom at the same wall.

Margaret tipped the water out onto the path. The colour ran, pink into the gravel, down towards the lane where the stream turned. In the morning the stream was clear, and the gerbera on the bench had shed every petal but one, which had folded itself neatly over its own black eye, as if it had finally been allowed to close.
