Daisy and leaf bouquet drawing
Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A cluster of daisy-like flowers, a larger open bloom at the centre, smaller blossoms and a few buds, is arranged with broad serrated leaves and trailing sprigs. The linework is fine and dark, with hatched shading on the petals and leaves giving them depth. The drawing is in black ink on a pale pinkish background, with the composition running diagonally from top left to bottom right.

The bouquet had sat on the hall table since Tuesday, and by Thursday Enid Pryce had stopped pretending it was someone else's job to move it. Nobody at Bellweather House would admit to buying it. The daisies were big, open things, their centres domed and dark like pincushions, tangled with the feathery sprigs that grew wild along the seawall. Someone had wrapped the stems in a page torn from the Tide Tables, and the ink had bled into the damp.

Enid knew the handwriting on the card before she read it. Mr Ashdown had left on the early coach that Saturday with his brown case and his good hat, owing her a fortnight's rent and a sheet he had never returned. She had not expected him to come back, and she had not expected him to be sorry. The card said only: For the room with the sea view. Keep the window open for the gulls.
She carried the flowers up the narrow stairs, past the loose runner and the brass rod that would not stay straight. In Number Four the window was already open, and the wind off the bay lifted the curtain like a held breath. She set the jug on the sill, where the light from the harbour came through the glass and turned the petals almost silver.
Downstairs the kettle began to rattle. Enid stood a moment longer than she needed to, watching the daisies lean towards the water, then went down to answer it. The vacancy sign could stay in the window another week, she decided. Mr Ashdown could have his room back if he came for it, and if he didn't, the flowers would still be there to tell her he had meant to.
