Botanical · Black and grey · Flash
A detailed black outline drawing of a sunflower head with layered petals, a dense seed-filled centre and a curling stem. The mule refused the last switchback above Kessa, so I unloaded the sacks myself and carried them up on my back, one at a time, while the wind tried to take my hat. Father used to say the pass was only a wall until you stopped arguing with it. He said a great many things like that, most of them over the stove in October, when the seed heads were brown and heavy and he was counting coins out on the oilcloth.

Every September we carried sunflower seed down from the high terraces to the valley markets, forty kilos at a time, packed in sacking that smelled of oil and dust. The seed was the easy part. What the pass really took was patience, and Father had plenty of it while I had none. I wanted the new road, a lorry that could take the lot in a single morning, and I told him so every year, and every year he laughed and reached for the kettle.
The winter he died, I found a sunflower growing out of a crack beside the cairn at the summit, a single head no taller than my knee. Nobody had planted it. A bird must have dropped a seed from a load. It had grown with its back to the snow and its face turned down the eastern slope, toward the valley road where Father's cart always went first.
I left it where it was. I still come up each September with the sacks on my back, and each year the head has swung a little further round, following the sun up over the ridge the way he used to watch for it from the doorway. I have stopped asking it to face the other way.
