Dancer outline tattoo on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a dancer in a long, flared skirt with a patterned bodice, with one arm extended to the right and a leg lifted behind. It is drawn in thin single outlines with small dot and diamond motifs inside the skirt, and the figure's head is outlined without facial features. The lines are mainly teal and red with black accents on the foot and a curved shape, set against lightly freckled skin on the thigh.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The guard at the bridge over the Vell had counted every cart that spring, and he counted the girl too, though she had no cart and no papers, only a bundle tied with red thread and a skirt that flared like a bell when she walked. "Name?" he asked. She told him she had none that the river would accept. "Then what do you carry?" She untied the bundle and shook out a bodice stitched with diamonds and dots, the same pattern her grandmother had worked into every hem in the valley before the line was drawn through it.

Inspectors do not like dancing. The older guard, Tomas Reiss, said as much, and his partner laughed and said the bridge was too narrow for a dance anyway. So she danced on the planks, one arm flung out toward the far shore, the other hand lifted as if to catch a bird, and her skirt spun out in layers until the lamplight caught the small red dots and the blue edge of every fold. The carters stopped. A goat stopped. Nobody could say afterwards what the figure on the bridge looked like, only that her head was drawn in a single careful line and she was smiling.

When the dance ended she was standing on the far side of the river without remembering the crossing. Reiss found her stamp in his book, a small red diamond, and the clerk swore he had never written it. The bodice lay folded on the rail, and by morning it had gone.

Some say the valley women still sew a diamond into their hems, so that the river will know them when they come back over.
