You'll not believe what Dai Pritchard did in the welfare hall on Saturday. He had a photograph folded in his shirt pocket, cut from somebody's cousin's magazine and gone soft at the corners, and he propped it against the tea urn so the whole room could see. A man in a black suit and a hat, one foot kicked up behind him as if he'd forgotten the floor was there. Half the lads had never seen anything like it. Mr Rees said it was a disgrace, then asked to borrow the picture for his Tuesday session.

Dai had been practising in the lamp room since the shifts were cut. Nobody was there to stop him. He'd switch off the bulb, leave the door ajar, and do the pose in his socks with the red ribbon Mam gave him for the Eisteddfod tied round his forehead. Ffion from the post office said she could hear the boards creaking through the wall at two in the morning and thought the pit had gone quiet for good.

It has, mostly. The colliery office shut its gate in March and the men stand about outside the Co-op with their hands in their pockets. Last week Dai came down to the hall with the photograph again, and this time he didn't show anyone. He stood it on the piano lid, tied on the ribbon, and looked at it a long while. Then he went and found his brother and asked him to hold the other end of the tune.
