Tribal bands tattoo on a lower leg

Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo wraps around the lower leg in several horizontal bands of solid black with bold geometric and tribal-style motifs, including a central eye shape and zigzag edging. The linework is crisp and the black fills are dense, with no shading or colour. The leg is photographed straight on against a tiled floor, with a white sneaker visible at the bottom of the frame.

Marisol had cut the same eye into brass for eleven years, the one the harbour office pressed onto manifests to say a crate had been looked at. At half past two in the morning the workshop smelled of machine oil and wet wool, and the rest of the city was a dark mass beyond the shutter. Her father's stamp, the one with the zigzag border, lay on the bench beside a tin of ink gone solid at the lid.

The night clerk, Tobias Ferrand, came down the back stairs with a folded sheet and no greeting. "Stamp it," he said. "Bottom left, the eye and the border, then sign under." She asked what was in the crate. He said it was registered as lamp oil. She unfolded the sheet and saw the weight had been written twice, once in pencil and once in ink, and the ink said more.

Her father had kept one rule above all others: the eye sees what is in the box, and you do not stamp what you have not seen. So she took the stamp in one hand, the brass cold and heavy, and walked down to the quay with the sheet inside her coat. The crane was still. Gulls slept on the bollards. Ferrand's lantern waited at the warehouse door like a second moon.

She pressed the eye onto the sheet, then turned it over and pressed it again on the back, where the next inspector would find it. Beneath both she wrote her own name in capitals, slowly, so that anyone reading it in daylight would know who had looked. Ferrand reached for the paper. She kept her hand flat on it until he met her eyes. "Open the crate," she said, "and then I'll sign."
