Two black silhouette tattoos on the backs of a person's calves, one showing a man in a suit with a red tie, the other an abstract dark figure.

Silhouette figures on both calves

Calf · Mixed · Photo

The photo shows the back of a person's lower legs, with a black silhouette tattoo on each calf. The left design is a standing figure in a suit with a small red tie, with one arm raised, while the right is a more abstract dark silhouette of a bent figure. The shapes are solid black with clean edges and no visible shading, set against a plain grey road crossing.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Ivy Pascoe had cut silhouettes on the pier at Porthcarne for nineteen summers, and she knew the trick of it was never to look at the face. Look at the edge of the head, she told the girls who sat for her in their Sunday frocks, because the edge is all anyone will ever see from across the sand.

On the Thursday the Lord Mayor's nephew came down the front in a grey suit, too warm for July, with a red tie knotted tight at his throat. He wanted his likeness cut for his mother's birthday. He stood against the white card with one arm flung out as if hailing a cab at the crossing outside the Co-op, and Ivy snipped without drawing first. The scissors sang through the paper. When she held it up to the window he laughed and said it looked like him on his way to be sacked.

The second cutting she made for herself, that night, after the lamp was turned down. She had a bad hip and a worse memory of the dance hall in 1938, and she cut a figure bent double, one shoulder dropping, the whole body folding like a letter left too long in a pocket. She pinned it to the shop door beside the tide timetable and left it there.

Nobody asked what it meant. In September a young man came in off the train with a rucksack and a crooked grin, studied the two shapes for a long while, and asked whether she did them in ink as well as paper.
