Two cartoon trees on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
A bare lower leg shows two stylised trees, each with a soft, fluffy pink or orange crown on a long striped trunk that runs down towards the ankle. The crowns are shaded with smooth gradients and the outlines are thin and dark, giving a playful illustrative look. The leg is photographed outdoors on asphalt, with jeans rolled above the calf and a teal sneaker at the bottom of the frame.

Dunmore's mules would not go past the second cairn, so the boy unloaded the salt himself and carried it up the scree in two sacks, swearing at the weather under his breath. Above him the two trees stood where they always stood, one leaning out over the path and the other hanging back in the shadow of a rock. Their trunks were banded the colour of old honey, and their crowns were soft as carded wool, pink on the sunward side and the colour of a banked fire on the other.

His grandmother had told him they were sisters who quarrelled over a well. Nobody remembered the well any more. The sisters had kept their quarrel, though, and each had kept her share of the light, so the pass was always dim on one side and bright on the other. Travellers said you could tell which sister was angry by which way the crowns faced. The boy had never believed it, and he did not believe it now, but he set the sacks down between the two trunks because the wind was coming off the snow and it was the only shelter for a mile.
The storm came in the night and he heard the trunks creak all through it. When he woke the crowns had come together over the path, the pink tufts threaded through the orange like wool laid over wool, and the drifts had been pushed back into a clean white wall on either side. The mules were already stamping in the road below.
He shouldered the sacks again. Before he went on he looked back, and the leaning sister had let her branches fall a little towards her sister, so that the sun came down through both of them at once.
