Daisy and script quote on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single daisy is outlined in fine dark ink at the right of the frame, with its petals and centre shaded lightly. Cursive script reading in a world of my own runs leftwards from the flower across the forearm, with a leaf-like flourish above the word world. The ink is dark blue-black on pale skin against a teal backdrop, and the composition is a horizontal band across the arm.

Dear Tom,

The 4.10 has been cancelled again, so I am writing this on the bench outside the booking hall while Mr Abney sweeps the platform with the same broom he has used since the Coronation. He says the line will close in the spring, and he says it the way other men talk about weather. Yesterday he found me counting the sleepers and told me I was away with the fairies again. I told him I was only in a world of my own, which is what Mother always said about me, and he laughed so hard he had to sit down on the milk churns.
Behind the fence there is a patch of ground nobody has ever mown, and this morning it was full of daisies, the small flat-faced sort that close up at dusk. I picked one and pressed it inside the timetable. You will think me soft, but I have decided the flower is the only thing on this platform that is not waiting for a train.
Mr Abney says the last service will run on the first of March. He asked whether I would go into the city with the others or stay on with the signal box. I have not answered him yet. I keep thinking of the house on Sowerby Road, and of Father's handwriting on the back of every envelope he sent, all those loops and leaves that never quite joined up.
I am posting this at the hut so it reaches you before the line goes. The daisy is folded in with it. Keep it somewhere dry. If the trains stop, at least something will have arrived.
