Dandelion and music notes on upper back

Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A dandelion seed head sits on the left of the frame, with its seeds breaking away into a line of musical notes that curve up towards the shoulder. A small music symbol sits near the shoulder edge. The dandelion is shaded in black and grey ink, the notes are drawn in crisp black linework, and the photograph is taken from behind with the head cropped out.

The piano in the Ashby Road chapel had been out of tune since spring, and Mr Hollis had promised the vicar it would be right before the harvest supper. He arrived on a Tuesday with a leather case, a bag of felt wedges and a jam jar of dandelion clocks he had picked from the verge outside the station, because his daughter Nell would not let him leave without them.

He worked through the afternoon, tapping each key with the flat of his thumb. Middle C rang clean, but the A above it wandered flat, like a hymn singer who had lost the thread. Nell sat on the front pew blowing seeds across the aisle, and each breath sent them drifting over the keys. One caught in a shaft of sunlight above the lid and hung there, turning slowly, while the hammer strikes seemed to lift with it.

When he lifted the lid to check the action, a seed had lodged under the felt of the A hammer. He meant to brush it out, but when he pressed the key the note came up true, bright and steady, as though the small weight had been the only thing holding it down. He sat very still and didn't touch it again.

The vicar came in at five, listened to the chapel fill with a chord he hadn't heard in years, and asked who had done the work. Hollis nodded at the window, where one last seed was lifting off the sill and heading towards the churchyard, carrying a note nobody had written down.
