Birds on a branch across a foot

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo of three bird silhouettes perched on a thin, forking branch runs diagonally across the top of the foot, with two small birds in flight beside the ankle. A single curled spiral sits on the side of the second toe. The design uses solid black silhouettes for the birds and fine, tapering lines for the branch, set against pale tiled flooring and pink painted toenails.

"They are waiting for the thaw," said Edric, and he went back down to the kitchen.

Mab Tennant took the bread up to the east tower that afternoon, as she did every day, though the lady inside had not come to the window since Michaelmas. The stair wound up through the wall with a rail worn smooth as a bone, and each turn let in a little more wind off the moor. At the top the lady sat with her knees drawn up, and she asked without looking round whether the birds were still there.

"Three," said Mab. "Though two went over the far wall when the bell rang for none, and I never saw where they came down."

"Then they have gone to look," the lady said, and for the first time since Michaelmas she got up and came to the window.

Mab went down the stair and out to the ditch. The thorn held only the top bird now, its tail lifting in the wind, and beyond the broken wall the other two were small marks over the sea, heading south where the lady's brother had gone for the wars and never come home.
